iPhone 4 Gets Early Drop Test

iPhone 4 drop 536×714 iPhone 4 Gets Early Drop TestA cell phone repair shop got some parts for Apple’s iPhone 4  early, and decided to see how tough it was. Taking into account that there’s no circuit board inside, the casing handled 2 drops from 3.5 feet onto concrete, shattering on the third. In a separate test, the iPhone 4 handled 6-7 drops before breaking, and in yet another it broke on the first drop when it was face-down.
There is apparently a video floating around of the new glass plating on the front and back of the iPhone 4 bending, but flexibility doesn’t necessarily translate to shock absorption, and the glass on both sides is actually raised above the bezel rather than being flush with it on previous iPhones, making it even more vulnerable than older devices.
Here’s how Apple  describes the new glass:
All the breakthrough technology in iPhone 4 is situated between two glossy panels of aluminosilicate glass — the same type of glass used in the windshields of helicopters and high-speed trains. Chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, the glass is ultradurable and more scratch resistant than ever. It’s also recyclable.
Sounds to me like being stiffer and harder would only make the screen even more prone to shattering, but the tester reported that it managed the scratch test extremely well – keys, razors, and screwdrivers didn’t leave a mark. Not like Apple would sell you a protective screen if you wanted one anyway; you’re better off getting one of those new bumpers

Walmart starts stocking iPhone 4

Apple’s iPhone 4 will be launched in the US and a few other markets on June 25 (this Friday). If you’re wondering where in the US you will be able to find it besides AT&T and Apple stores, one of the answers includes Walmart.
According to Engadget, the American retailer has already received some iPhone 4 units.
The photo below, showing an iPhone 4 box, was allegedly taken in a Walmart store. And, although Verizon might get the new iPhone later this year, that box seen in the back, with CDMA written on it, has nothing to do with Apple’s smartphone (it packs LG C290C phones)

Apple iPhone 4 (CDMA / Verizon)

The hugely successful Apple iPhone 4 is available on lots of carriers around the world, but one major market has remained untouched by Apple.. and that one is in its own backyard. So far, the US Verizon Wireless network – the largest carrier in the US – has not had a version of the iPhone to run on its CDMA network.. but that is about to change.
Using the same “retina” display, 5 megapixel camera with HD video recording and powerful A4 processor, this version of the iPhone looks almost identical to the GSM/UMTS version used worldwide.
Available for preorder from February 3rd and then released generally on February 10th, the 16GB iPhone 4 will cost $199.99 with a 2 year contract, and the 32GB version will be $299.99.
Unlike a lot of recent Verizon releases, the iPhone 4 is not a 4G “LTE” device, instead using Verizon’s existing 3G EVDO network. This should certainly be good enough for most people, and Verizon has a reputation for having the best coverage in the United States which is definitely a competitive advantage.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about the Verizon version of the iPhone 4 is the impact on the market it will have. AT&T have been snapping at Verizon’s heels for the number one spot in the US, and the availability of the iPhone will take away some of AT&T’s edge. Verizon already have a high-end smartphone range, the “DROID” series of phones which are mostly supplied by Motorola. It’s quite possible that Motorola will see a sales dip as one of their arch-rivals moves onto the Verizon network

The iPhone 4

It is now four years since the first iPhone model came to market and much has changed between that first Apple handset and the new iphone4.
Although it received a tremendous reception from the public some critics did not consider it to be that highly advanced in terms of available computing power. However, it was one of the very first smartphones that incorporated a touchscreen as the main user interface.
The reason it was considered better than its competitors was due to its ability to respond to multi-touch gestures and the web browser was also considered to be the best phone based browser on the market.
The second generation iPhone was launched in summer 2008, with several improvements over the original model. The major breakthrough was 3G connectivity which added a whole new world of functionality. 3G was the step forward that made web browsing on a smartphone a real joy rather than a frustrating exercise, waiting for a page to download.
The Apple App Store appeared at the same time along with many exciting apps many of which could be downloaded for free. So popular is the App Store that since its launch there have been well over 10 billion downloads.
A year after the second generation iPhone came the third generation, which was known as the iPhone 3GS. This had improved functionality and a faster processor and an improved camera. The current iPhone generation was launched towards the latter part of 2010 with many significantly improved features and in particular a rear facing camera that can be used for video chat. Screen resolution was also vastly improved.
Each new model came with an improved version of the Apple operating system which is now called the iOS. Its original design was loosely based on the Darwin module of the Apple Mac OSX. The iPhone also incorporates iTunes, which operates as an iPhone content manager.
Although the iPhone 4 may no longer be the leading smartphone in terms of technology, it remains as the leading one in terms of style.
